Kandiyohi County Service Charge (Tax) Increase and Rate Change Effective January 1, 2017

On October 18, 2016, Kandiyohi County Board of Commissioners voted to make rate and policy changes affecting the landfill disposal costs and Service Charge (tax) rate.

The Board made decisions they expect will extend the life of the landfill and also provide a sustainable revenue stream to support all their solid waste, recycling and hazardous waste programs.

The major changes in summary:

  • Reduce out-of-Kandiyohi County waste flow into landfill.  The Board raised the rate of disposal on out-of-county waste to $95.00 per ton, thereby discouraging this activity.  This may result in a loss of approximately $500,000 per year of revenue to the County.
  • Decrease in-Kandiyohi County disposal fee from $41.00 per ton to $30.00 per ton.  This affects the costs we pay to dispose of your trash.
  • Increase Kandiyohi County Service Charge from 6.2% to 24% of your invoice billed by the hauler and remitted to the County.  It is important to understand this Service Charge (tax) is applied to the entire trash collection and disposal bill.  This is projected to increase revenue to Kandiyohi County of about $500,000 per year.

How this affects your cost of services:

Your total bill will increase by approximately 15%.  Most bills will see a slight decrease in your monthly rate for service. However, the large Service Charge (tax) increase of 287% on your total bill will result in a higher invoice.
